Our story began in Ithaca, New York where we met as Photography and Sociology students. As freshmen, we worked for the college paper, which involved developing our own film under deadline. We shot our first wedding together 15 years ago as photography students... also on film. After graduating, Rick went to grad school in London and Bernadette roamed the streets of London with her camera. Rick proposed. Bernadette said yes. We got married in San Diego…and Narrative Images was our first child.
Over ten years later, Narrative Images has grown to include a team of amazing photographers and an extended family of wonderful couples that we’ve had the honor of getting to know as we’ve photographed the most precious moments in their lives.
Originally from San Diego, Bernadette’s interest in photography and culture led her to study, photograph and teach in different parts of the world. Along with running Narrative Images for more than ten years, she has also taught at local community arts organizations (The AjA Project and MOPA the Museum of Photographic Arts) that use photography as a tool for personal transformation and social change.
Behind the camera, Bernadette is all about composition and capturing the decisive moment. At the office, she’s the office manager, social media guru, blogger, album designer and dj. After work, you can find her in the garden, on a hike or on a roadtrip...and always with her family and a camera.
Rick grew up on the East Coast in a community where he was first introduced to photography by the father of his childhood friend (an award winning photojournalist). In college Rick studied Photography and Sociology, eventually graduating from the London School of Economics. His interest in people and culture have informed his perspective and shaped the approach that he takes to all of his photographic work.
Behind the camera, Rick is all about finding interesting light and new vantage points. At the office, he’s the editor, strategist, website designer, and gear head. After work, you can find Rick in the gym, training with our son at the track, camping, or with his head in a good dense academic read.
