Bernadette

A little about Bernadette:

Bernadette holds degrees in Sociology and Photography and has been an educator in the field of photography for various organizations including the AjA Project as well as MOPA (Museum of Photographic Arts). She has documented people and their experiences in many parts of the world. In the past few years, her work has led her to photograph and teach in Africa, S. America, the Caribbean as well as Europe.

A little more:

My curiosity to learn about others is what initially drew me to photography. It’s not so much about me expressing myself but about seeking a way to understand others. Photography is my tool to explore the world and people I share it with.
I picked up my first manual camera when my father, an avid photography hobbyist, took me out to teach me about aperture and shutter speed by photographing the San Diego sunset.  I loved the challenges involved in grasping lighting. But it wasn’t until I took the camera to Balboa Park and started photographing strangers that I really fell in love with the medium. It’s really about the people for me.

When I’m not working, I am…

In awe of my son, Dylan. Running with the stroller and some other Moms in some great place outdoors. Making yummy salads. At a farmers market. Dancing. Trying very hard to still my mind through meditation. Drinking coffee [which makes the meditation thing kind of difficult]. Teaching photography to kids. Coming up with all kinds of really cool projects [involving sewing machines, beads, paper, typewriters, instruments, and cameras] that I can’t seem to find the time to do! Dreaming of South Africa. Striving to be present. Loving the life that Rick and I have created together.
