Everyday happiness with our little guy

Caterpillar

One of the greatest things about having a child is watching them discover things for the first time… yesterday, Dylan held a caterpillar for the first time.  The best part was watching him gently return the caterpillar to his home:-)

H 2 O

One of my most favorite things about having a child is that you get to experience the world again as if you were a child. Each experience is new, pure and exciting.  Children don’t take things for granted the way that adults sometimes do.  Every time our little guy takes a bath, you would think he was experiencing water for the very first time. The awe and the joy on his face is just amazing to observe, as you can see.

Tonight, while I was giving Dylan a bath and watching him just enjoy the water, I was struck with a renewed appreciation for this precious resource that I take for granted each and every day. So many people in this world don’t have clean running water, and we enjoy a seemingly unlimited supply without even thinking about it.  WaterAid is an organization that is working to provide clean drinking water for the world’s poorest people. Check out their site to learn more about water security issues.  And, in the meantime, enjoy the water we are so fortunate to have!

Inspiration | Jim Denevan

I recently and happily stumbled upon the work of this Californian artist and just had to share.  Jim Denevan is a sand artist.  He spends anywhere from 3-7 hours and walks around 20 miles to create one of his drawings in the sand.  His only tools are sticks that wash ashore and an occasional garden implement.  You can see the scale of his creations in the images below.  The waves eventually wash his creations away, and this is all part of the creative process for him. “I love to complete a piece just as the tide comes in so that in that moment it is finished and destroyed,” he said.

Beyond being beautiful to look at, his installations demonstrate the nature of impermanence.  It’s really crucial for me to see the single person in each photo, too.  It reveals a sense of scale and a humbling perspective of how humans measure up in nature.  To me, his work is very Zen in nature.  It’s about being in the present moment, and it’s about letting go.

Gentle. Peaceful. Glow.

Rick created this amazing image of our dear friend, Cassi, during our photo shoot last weekend, and I’m so in love with it that I just had to share.  Rick said, “That photo describes the feeling I got when out in that field with her… she emanated a gentle, peaceful glow that I wanted to describe in the photo.”  This image really resonates with me, and I’m so happy that my husband could see and capture so beautifully the grace and peace of a new Mom.
