California State Champions

My brother, Brendan Johnston, coaches the Saint Augustine High School soccer team, who just won the CIF Finals and continued on to win the California State Championship yesterday. It was pretty awesome to be able to watch the game from down on the field and shoot some photos last week at the semi finals.  Here are a few shots from the game that I think tell the story of the win. As you can see, I’m pretty proud of my brother, who was voted Coach of the Year in San Diego a couple of years ago and just has a really strong passion for soccer and for working with young people. Here he is below (on the right).

Rick + Bernadette | Five Year Anniversary Photo Shoot

So, we finally did it! We got in front of the camera. Over the years, we have photographed many, many couples, and so many times after the shoot I think, “I wish we had photos like this of us.”  We got married almost 6 years ago, and we made the day about enjoying our guests and the wedding we had created. So, we didn’t really take much time out for photos. I absolutely loved my wedding dress and thought I should really get more mileage out of it;-)So, we decided to ask two of our fabulous photographers, Lori and Cara to photograph us for our 5 year anniversary.

This location, the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum, was a perfect location for us for many reasons.  For one, who doesn’t love these beautiful artifacts from another time? A slower time, a time before digital media, a time of farewells and letter writing, a time of exploration and adventure, a time of connection.  And who doesn’t wish she could be in one of those movie scenes where lovers are reunited at the train station? So romantic!

What’s so cool about this location, specifically, is that these fossils are out in the middle of nowhere. They are a couple miles from the Mexico border, surrounded by desert.  I feel like an archeologist happening upon an ancient civilization when I’m there! To me, trains just have a fascinating history. They are a symbol of adventure, expansion and connection…what better symbols for Rick and my twelve years together? It has certainly been an adventurous journey for us.  Starting in upstate New York, we’ve driven across the US a couple of times, lived and worked in Yosemite, traveled across Southern Africa, studied in the Dominican Republic, lived in London, tied the knot, started a business together and then experienced, the most profound of all journeys: pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood, which brings me to the second reason why this location was perfect for us.

Our three year old son, Dylan, has had an obsession with trains since he was about six months old and we would watch the trolley go by.  You know how most kids sleep with a stuffed animal, blankie, or other soft, squishy toy? Well, Dylan would sleep with a hard, plastic Thomas train in his fist!  Taking our photos at this location was a way to include Dylan, since he has been a monumental part of our journey together.

To put that wedding dress back on after everything we’ve experienced together and look over at this guy who has been there through all of this was kind of magical.  Yes, we are a little more sun damaged (I’d like to think of it as ‘aged,’ like a fine wine!) than we were on our wedding day, but we have a lot of depth to show for it.  I’ll take some wrinkles!  What a fun way to celebrate our 5 year anniversary! And thank you to Lori and Cara for documenting this special time for us.

Lucie’s Bat Mitzvah | Fort Collins and San Diego

There is something just so beautiful about ritual. Tradition, gesture, language, symbolism, contemplation and reflection, song, and the whole community aspect.  I am just fascinated by ritual, and we both feel so honored to be invited into these sacred spaces to document them.  Rick and I had never been to a Bat Mitzvah, and being able to document it with fresh eyes was really nice because we were able to experience it and document, simultaneously. The rituals in the Bat Mitzvah ceremony were all very old and beautiful, and we were so impressed with Lucie’s poise and grace as she read or sang in Hebrew.  It was really cool to see the pride in Lucie’s parents’ faces during it all, too!  I really wish we had been able to experience some sort of spiritual/cultural ritual to celebrate our own transitions out of childhood.  It’s such a paramount transition in your life.  It really should be marked with a ritual.  Nonetheless, we were honored to be able to be thereto document this ceremony, and the party in Fort Collins was so fun! Again, what I would have given to have had a party like that as a teenager!  Being at the party brought back so much nostalgia for those middle school years… so much fun and excitement! Congratulations to Lucie!

A little visit…

We recently had a visit by little Sean, Rich and Karen’s beautiful baby boy! Made our day! I remember photographing these two’s engagement session, then their wedding day not too long ago…and now getting to hold the physical manifestation of that love…so incredible! Rick and I look forward to seeing how Sean grows in the coming years:-)Thanks for sharing him, Rich and Karen! You are blessed.

A Different Medium

Check out this awesome video which features the work of two of the artists who work with us, Alexis and Ryan. Alexis is one of our very talented designers who works on many of our albums. The music in the video was actually composed by Ryan, (Rick’s Bro + editing protege). Ryan and Alexis have been working with us mostly behind the scenes, so we wanted to share some of their creative talents. We love that our team (editor, designer, and of course our photographers) is comprised of so many interesting, friendly, fun, and creative people. It is inspiring to work with people who are able to move between different mediums.
