Savannah in Portland

My cousin in Portland recently had a sweet, sweet baby girl, Savannah.  I flew up there for a few days to hold this little baby and take some photos…and here she is!  It’s so cool to be able to experience my life through the camera because I am able to get close and observe the details, to pull back and view things from a different perspective and to share how I see things.  What I saw on this trip was not just a newborn baby but a new-born Mom. It was so cool to witness my cousin’s transformation into motherhood. And a beautiful Mama she is! I’m so happy I was able to spend this time there and document the beginnings of a family…

Lucie’s Bat Mitzvah | Fort Collins and San Diego

There is something just so beautiful about ritual. Tradition, gesture, language, symbolism, contemplation and reflection, song, and the whole community aspect.  I am just fascinated by ritual, and we both feel so honored to be invited into these sacred spaces to document them.  Rick and I had never been to a Bat Mitzvah, and being able to document it with fresh eyes was really nice because we were able to experience it and document, simultaneously. The rituals in the Bat Mitzvah ceremony were all very old and beautiful, and we were so impressed with Lucie’s poise and grace as she read or sang in Hebrew.  It was really cool to see the pride in Lucie’s parents’ faces during it all, too!  I really wish we had been able to experience some sort of spiritual/cultural ritual to celebrate our own transitions out of childhood.  It’s such a paramount transition in your life.  It really should be marked with a ritual.  Nonetheless, we were honored to be able to be thereto document this ceremony, and the party in Fort Collins was so fun! Again, what I would have given to have had a party like that as a teenager!  Being at the party brought back so much nostalgia for those middle school years… so much fun and excitement! Congratulations to Lucie!

Forest | Montclair, NJ.

A shoot we did in Rick’s hometown a couple of days before Christmas!  This little guy with the most adorable smile is Forest. He is sweet, bright, and likes to talk on the phone;-)  Several times throughout the session, he would reach into his pocket, pull out his trusty imaginary smartphone and answer, “hello?”  Pretty soon, he’s going to be texting, or perhaps updating his status on his imaginary Facebook. We had so much fun following him around the town and documenting all of his sweet moments, with lots of laughter in between! We ended this cold shoot in a really cute tea shop on Church Street in Montclair.
I think Rick looks very at home here in his coat, hat and camera in hand.
Tea and my camera! What more do I need?

A Perfect Day (Colorado Part III)

We’ve heard great things about Boulder but didn’t get a chance to visit until recently.  What a great little college town at the foothills of the Rockies. Rick and I felt so at home, as the town totally reminded us of the college town where we met and spent 4 amazing years together…Ithaca, NY.  We checked out the local shops on Pearl Street, went for a glorious hike, and meandered through the farmer’s market where we ate some local goodness. We closed up the afternoon with an outdoor performance by Zimbabwean musicians where Dylan and I danced our hearts out. We then watched the sun set as we drove back into the mountains.  A perfect day. We’ll definitely be back to Boulder. In fact, we’re hoping to shoot a wedding out there this next year… so, if you know anyone out there getting married, send them our way!
